Out with the Ugly

We've been trying for nearly three years now to find someone brave enough to go on our roof. Because of its steep pitch, our inspector and our chimney cleaner wouldn't dare go up there. So when we were over at a neighbors' house and a guy was blowing leaves off of their roof and they asked us, "Hey, do y'all have any roof work you need done?", Stuart and I both looked at each other and laughed.

You see, we've been wanting to get this eye sore of an antenna removed ever since we bought our house, but could never get anyone to do the job. It was GIGANTIC in real life and who knows when the last time it was actually in use (all the wires were cut and hanging down the side of our house). So our neighbors' roof guy came over and gave it a quick look and told us he'd be in touch.

Figuring we'd never hear from him, we didn't have our hopes too high. But later that week he called back and said, sure, he'd take it down and would only charge us $60 bucks. That was one of the easiest house-related decisions we've made--we immediately scheduled him to come out the following weekend.

He brought another guy with him and the two of them trekked to the top of our roof to remove the antenna, sans harnesses. I was so nervous I had to go inside, so Stuart took all of these pictures!

He said that the guy at the top in the picture above literally walked along the point where our roof comes together without holding on to anything--yikes!

After about 15 minutes of banging and other various noises that, from the inside, sounded like the roof was going to cave in, they got it down. You get a good idea of how big the darn thing was with them holding it. Thank goodness for our petite little DIRECTV satellite we have now that is easily hidden on the back side of the house.

Bombs away!

Thankfully, they offered to haul it away for us. I think it took them longer to break it down into manageable pieces to haul off than it did for them to get it off the roof. Seriously, best $60 we've ever spent!
